"After attending a 15-day workshop conducted by Goat Resource Center (GRC) on herbal treatment of animals, Balamdina Tirkey learnt the following recipe. She has now trained 500 women for preparing this herbal bolus and supplies it to local goat reapers-keepers who have
reported it to be effective.
List of Ingredients required for 10 sheep or goats / 5 dairy animals: are given below:
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) 10g, Cumin (Cuminum cyminum ) 10g, Coriader seeds (Coriandrum sativum) 20g, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) 20g, Aajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) 10g, Ginger (Zingiber officinale) 50g, Turmeric powder (Curcuma longa) 50g, Ghrit kumari (Aloe vera) 100g, galo stem and leaves (Tinospora cordifolia) 100g, Garlic (Allium sativum) 50g, Lal mirch (red pepper/chillies) 50g, Paan (betel leaves) 10 leaves, Kari patta (Murraya koenigii) 100g, Basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum) 50g, Tarwar leaves and flowers (Cassia auriculata) 100g, Nariyal (Cocos nucifera)100g, jaggery 100g, rock salt 50g, Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) 100g.
Method of preparation:
First grind all the dry ingredients i.e. black pepper, cumin, coriander seeds, fenugreek, carom seeds, red chillies. Secondly, grind all the fresh herbs
i.e. Aloe vera, curry leaf, garlic, basil, ginger, turmeric, coconut (grated), and tarwar. Finally, mix the dry spice powder and herbal items, add crushed jaggery and rock salt thoroughly. Make bolus of approximately 80g of the prepared mixture. These bolus can be stored up to seven days in a moisture free shaded area.
For preventive purposes, one bolus of 25gm should be given empty stomach once a month.
The bolus is reportedly effective in treating and controlling breeding/ reproductive problems, internal parasite infestation, blue tongue fever, mMastitis, hemorrhagic septicaemia and digestive problems viz. Anorexia, indigestion, off feed, ruminalatony, impaction etc. It is also useful for gaining weight. The herbal bolus is also helps in preventing foot and mouth diseases.
Total 23 different herbs were used to prepare different recipes to cure
