"Linking french student with rural realities
Anja Carron carron@theia.international
Hopefully, you are doing well. I finished my first project pilots with schools, universities and got my visit to India scheduled from the 15th to the 29th of May. It would be a great pleasure to meet you and Dr Anamika.
Can one of my students join me on my travel and stay in India for two months? The purpose of the visit is to work in the field of grassroots innovation and sustainable organic farming. The visit is for the short term but he would like to utilise his study gap in exploring innovative and sustainable fields. To say that he is a motivated, talented and open-minded young man would be no exaggeration.
(Anja: we are very happy that your French student Mathias learned a lot during his field visits and also shared his insights. More students are always welcome. -Eds.)
Volunteering for environmental improvement
Amruta Pujari, USA
I was connecting with Ardhendu S. Chatterjee and saw you were a mutual connection. I was checking your book, Grassroots Innovation, and it has invaluable knowledge. I resonate with the thought of not solely relying on expensive research labs and there is a great possibility of recognizing the creative-innovative knowledge among the ordinary folk. This method is more effective as a person related to a specific culture and place can come with a much more efficient and sustainable solution. I currently work for the US government in the environmental regulations world. I am planning to quit next year and move back to India. One of the things I plan to do is to understand the rural ways of sustainable living. My father comes from a farmers’ background and currently, I am exploring the world of regenerative farming (permaculture, food forest, Krishi biodynamic, natural etc).
I aim to culminate my experience in chemical, nuclear environmental engineering and focus on reducing environmental contamination through the use of chemicals, pesticides etc.
Please let me know if you need any assistance with these topics. I would be happy to help in any way I can.
Happy to make your acquaintance.
(Thanks Amruta for connecting. The Honey Bee Network needs people in all domains in which we can improve livelihoods, environment, STI (science, technology and innovation) prospects for the common people as well for the youth. -Eds.)

Connecting students with social problems
Venkatesh. R venkatesh.r01@gmail.com
I have some thoughts to share, my intention is not about participating in the challenge but to pass on the ideas that may change the future. Creativity is required but an empathy-based generation as well is required with strong leadership.
It would be good to have a LinkedIn community where working professionals can contribute to the thought and kids can come up with new implementation techniques by collaboration.
…..We need a society where students from various educational backgrounds like medicine, engineering etc. to interact while delivering a final year project. It would be great if these students take up the social problems and come up with a solution in their projects.
Please check this story for more understanding
(Techpedia.in and ss.sristi.org have been trying to connect tech students with social problems, and http://www.gian. org/giannidhi.php is doing the same with polytechnic students. -Eds.)
Drinking straws from coconut leaves regarding
Saji Varghese English saji.varghese@christuniversity.in
I am a faculty at Christ University Bangalore. I teach Design Thinking and Social Innovation to my students of Management studies. It is an inspiration and great learning to listen to your talks which I am using in my sessions with my students. Sir, I am greatly inspired by your relentless commitment to empower and give voice to hundreds of grassroots innovators working among the unsung in the villages of India.
Sir, I have come up with an innovation of biodegradable straws from naturally fallen coconut leaves. We have also developed four machines for the production process which can be given to women groups in rural areas and engage them in the production of straws. I have started my pilot projects in Madurai, Kasargod and want to reach other villages of coastal India to create income-generating opportunities for women in the villages. The straws have received good response globally as it is made in a chemical-free process taking advantage of the natural wax in dry coconut leaves. This process makes the straws hydrophobic and antifungal. I have attached a video and some pictures which gives some details of our project.
I humbly request your guidance and support to take this forward.
It would be a great motivation to receive a line in reply from you.
(I am very happy that GIAN team has invested a small amount through MVIF, a GIAN-SIDBI partnership-based fund: looking forward to share your detailed story about how you generated jobs for rural women and linked ‘grassroots to Global’, with HBN readers soon: Eds)
New french version of Honey Bee
Catherine-Emeline ROBILLARD ce.robillard@yahoo.com.mx
Here is a prototype for a French version of the Honey Bee newsletter. A lot of the content is translated from an HBN newsletter I had and added some new content and made some improvisations. Hope people will start sharing their innovations with us after the release of these two newsletters.
Also, last week, I met with a French organization that scouts and shares mechanical solutions for farmers. This organization helps farmers in inventing and building their tools. I hope you can meet them next time you’re in France, in many ways they are a young sibling of the HBN. They’re called LAtelier paysan and here is their website: https://www. latelierpaysan.org/
(We greatly appreciate your efforts to start a French version of Honey Bee and hope you will sustain the efforts. -Eds.)
Request to be part of Honey Bee network
Sanjeev salaam A sanjeedsaalamz@gmail.com
I am Sanjeev Saalam A, pursuing a bachelor of technology in mechanical engineering at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kerala.
I got your contact from my mentor Jayakrishnan Divakaran Sir. Many students in our college are interested in entrepreneurship. We would like our college to be a part of your reputed Honey Bee Network. I am a founder of Innofap engineering LLP, a central government DIPP recognized startup. I have also developed a product and applied for a patent for the same. (an agricultural tool that helps to protect the banana plant from heavy wind and rain at a low cost). I feel that by being part of the Honey Bee Network, many students would be able to pursue their entrepreneurship journey by being in contact with society and industry. I am greatly inspired by hearing your talk on 24th October hosted by All Saints College,
Kerala and about Shodh Yatras
(Many thanks Sanjeev, you are now a volunteer of HBN. Please do share a small story about your innovation and start up for possible publication in HBN. Keep it up. -Eds.)

I got your email address from the Honey Bee website.
As an introduction, my name is Jatinder Pal. I have done M.E. from Roorkee University in telecommunications and an M.Sc. in Computer Science from McGill University, Montreal. I worked for Nortel Networks and Ciena for about 28 years as a software designer; manager and senior manager in Ottawa, Canada. Presently, I work as a consultant for the government of Canada for their telecommunications network. On the volunteering side, I have taught Swami Ram Dev Ji’s yoga for about eight years in Ottawa. I have been on the executive team for “The Great IndiaFestival” and have been the board member for the festival for the past three years.
I was looking at information related to the Honey Bee Network but all the information seems to be quite old. I would like to get involved with the Network. Please advise on the upcoming activities.
(Thanks Jitendra for taking interest in HBN and offering to get engaged with the network. hbncriia@gian.org is an international contest for innovative ideas, help us spread it around. -Eds.)
Problem solved by Innovators
Brigadier P Ganesham, VSM (Retd)
president@pallesrujana.org
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states
We discussed problems projected to Palle Srujana and solved by GRI over the years. These details are enclosed. May be useful in your presentation to TASK on 19 Dec as stated by you.
The process of asking for problems from society is on and we do get them. Where solutions are available in our innovation data, we connect them with respective innovators. If not, we decide on an innovator to find a solution after deliberation with innovators.
(Many thanks, Brig Ganesham, you are such a powerful source of inspiration to young people through your China Shodhyatras in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Your examples are powerul, and may be we should carry an article on your journey in HBN so far. -Eds.)
