"Another Brick in the Bottle
Representatives of Mutong village, with Green Ammo
East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya
The residents of Mutong village were concerned to learn that their hamlet was generating over 500 tonnes of waste everyday, of which a large portion was plastics. Combining forces with Green Ammo, a pan-Indian NGO, and the CCLMP team, the Mutong village council piloted a “Pay-per-Brick” project. This involved systematic collection of plastics, and employing people from within the village to process this waste into bricks. An incentive of Rs. 5 per brick was paid out. The bricks are made by filling plastic bottles with inorganic waste, and compressing them.
So far, the community has made almost 2,000 bottle bricks. Competitions and training workshops have helped increase community participation. Green Ammo set up the project only after obtaining free prior informed consent (FPIC) from the village. The village headman envisions using the bricks to create an eco-museum in the village, which would feature tales of the local history and heritage, and might generate some tourism.
