Details 25201 Ingoriya for pest-free farm To keep his produce pest free, Chhaganbhai crushes 5 kg Neem and 150 g Ingoriya (Balanites roxburghii Del.) fruits and boils in 70 litres of water. A detergent is used as a surfactant while boiling. The solution is prepared once a year and stored in an airtight drum. When required, he sprays 500 ml of the solution mixed in 15-litres of water. This helps in keeping his crops pest free. Many farmers in the area seek Chhaganbhai’s guidance for protecting their produce from pest damage. Chhaganbhai Panchabhai Metalia, Jasdan Taluka, Rajkot District. Scout: Ramesh Patel Azadirachta indica and Balanites roxburghii are known for such uses (Isman, Murray B., et al.1990. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 38(6): 1406-1411. Jain, Dharam C. 1987. Phytochemistry 26(8): 2223-2225). Also see Honey Bee, 2(1):15, 1991; Honey Bee, 8(4):10, 1997. 25202 Vegetable oil for stomach disorders Many a time, an animal develops bloat after the consumption of rotten food or too much green grass. Devkaranbhai relieves the animal of the problem by feeding it with 400-500 g vegetable oil and 25 g silk-cotton (Bombax ceiba L.) once a day. Devkaranbhai Jaiswal, Sehore Taluka, Sehore District of Madhya Pradesh Scout: Chetan Patel Ethnomedical use of Bombax ceiba is found to have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, properties among others (Verma, et al., 2011. Bombax ceiba Linn: Pharmacognostical, Phytochemistry, Ethnobotany, and Pharmacology studies). Vegetable edible oils were also reported for the treatment of gastric problems in animals (Honey Bee, 3(1):18, 1992) 25203 Piper betel helps animals regain consciousness Unable to resist the scorching sun, an animal can lose consciousness and collapse on the ground. Rahewar squeezes juice of 20-25 g wet Piper betel (Nagarvel) leaves and administers to the animal. Rahewar Juvansinh Makansinh, Modasa Taluka, Aravalli District Scout: Rahevar Komal Kuwar Sajansinh 25204 Cactus, desert date boon for farmers When Juvansinh notices red spots on the leaves of his crops, he crushes 2 kg each of cactus leaves and desert date fruits (Balanites roxburghii Del) and adds one litre of water, boils it till decoction is reduced to 500 ml and sprays it on the crops for five to six days. The red spots are believed to disappear. Rahewar Juvansinh Makansinh, Modasa Tehsil, Aravalli District Scout: Rahevar Komal Kuwar Sajansinh Antimicrobial and Insecticidal properties of Cactus and Balnites roxburghii are reported in Shafiei S., Kariminik A. and Hasanabadi Z. 2013. International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences Vol 7(12):907-910 and Jain D C., 1987. Phytochemistry 26 (8): 2223-2225. 25205 Prevent pests from damaging maize crop Vikrambhai extracts the juice of three kg of onion (Allium cepa L.) in half a litre of water. After filtering it in a piece of cloth, he sprays the solution on his maize crop for a few days. This prevents pests from destroying the produce on his one-acre smallholding before the harvest season. Vikrambhai A Rajput, Taluka Tharad, District Banaskantha Scout: Nai Vivek D Onion, because of its pungent smell and bitter taste, is effective for the control of aphids, ants, cabbage butterfly, mites, scale insects, thrips, tomato flies, ticks and whitefly and fungal diseases [http://www.ctdt.co.zw/attachments/020_081201_Integrated_Pest_Management_Manual.pdf] 25206 Calotropis cures eczema Karnabhai fills eight to ten hollow stems of crown flower (Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T.Aiton) with black pepper and heats them up. Then he removes the black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and grinds it into a paste using Indian beech (Millettia pinnata (L.) Panigrahi syn. Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre) oil. The paste is applied to the affected part of the animal suffering from eczema (skin disease), twice a day for a period of four to five days. Karnabhai K Bubadiya, Taluka Danta, District Banaskantha Scout: Kanubhai Prajapati The roots and fruits of Piper Nigrum are used for skin diseases and its paste is applied on boils and ring worm. Pongamia oil is used for the skin diseases of herpes, eczema etc reported by MC Sharma (http://www.hillagric.ac.in/edu/covas/vpharma/winter%20school/lectures/43%20herbal%20medicaments%20skin%20disease.pdf). External application juice of C. procera leaves or decoction of leaves in water is applied on eczema-infected animals (http://www.hillagric.ac.in/edu/covas/vpharma/winter%20school/lectures/43%20herbal%20medicaments%20skin%20disease.pdf and http://www.sciencepub.net/nature/ns0811/19_3880ns0811_130_139.pdf ] Honey Bee, 1997, 8(1):11, Honey Bee: 11(1) 9-10, 2000.) 25207 Screw pine for maggot wounds Ganvitbhai collects the juice of screw pine (Pandanus odoratissimus L.) leaves. He applies it on the maggot-infested wound of the cattle. This practice must be followed twice a day for five days. Ganvitbhai V Babubhai, Taluka Vansda, District Navsari Scout – Vahat Nileshbhai Chhotubhai (Pandanus odoratissimus leaf showed a positive effect against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus in a study done by Kumar et al, 2010 [ Kumar D., Kumar S., Kumar S., Singh J., Sharma C., & Aneja K.R. 2010. Pharmacologyonline. 2, 600-610]) 25208 Calotropis for camels Bachubhai boils two to eight sodom apple i.e. Calotropis procera Peer J (Ait. F) flowers in one litre of water till reduced to 250 ml. The camel must be fed small portions, thus helping it recover from ectoparasitic infestation on its legs. Feed it to the animal on alternate days i.e. thrice a day for five days. Nai Bachubhai Devchandbhai,Taluka Tharad, District Banaskantha Scout – Nai Mayur Jayantilal (An acaricidal formulation based on C. procera flowers has been made and evaluated.
