Something innovative I tried during lockdown
Soumya Kushwaha, MBA 2020, IIMA
Ever since I successfully completed the CINE course under your guidance, I’ve been itching to write to you and tell you about something innovative I did. Finally I get a chance to write to you to share a little initiative I undertook during the lockdown days. All those free days gave me some time to explore my old-time hobbies and I enjoyed that so much that I ended up creating quite a few adorable paintings. I also always wanted to hold an auction for my paintings someday. Thankfully, I painted enough of them to give it a try.
However, there was a big challenge in arranging the auction as I couldn’t get people to gather at a place. That’s when, one of my friends from the institute suggested that I do it online. To be honest, the idea sounded a little strange and unheard of but I decided to go ahead with it. I hail from a town in Haryana and not many people participate in auctions here! However, I still organised an online auction on Google Meet for the people from my town alone (for ease of delivery as far away deliveries were at halt that time!).
I floated a google form asking people to select the paintings they wished to bid for. The response wasn’t exceptional- only 11 people filled it and eventually only 3 turned up for the auction. But I kept going with the same spirit and eventually felt very glad that I actually did it. I’ve decided to donate 50% of the profits for the fight against Covid. I even wrote about it on LinkedIn and interestingly many people reached out to me asking how I organised an ‘online auction’ adding they would like to do something similar. So what if not many people participated in the auction. Just a little act of innovation, a little grit created many ripple effects, making my initiative truly successful, I believe :)
Shared this story with you to thank you as you created the same ripples for me over these past 2 years! Also, attaching a few creations from my brush here :) (I am happy that you tried, small beginnings are the essence of my life and i always encourage younger friends to do so, never hesitate in taking small steps keep it up, good that you contributed some resources for covid19 you do have talent, do continue to enchant us with your creative outpourings. -Ed.)
Regarding MOOC
Elisha Garg
CLASS – 11, APJ School, Noida elishagarg001@gmail.com
I am obliged to be a part of your HOW TO INNOVATE sessions. I attended your first session and it was a very enriching and informative session for me. You actually told something apart from what we learn in schools and textbooks. I have always craved for this kind of knowledge but unfortunately could never find a way to acquire it so nicely. I am so thankful that I am finally getting a chance to be a part of this beautiful journey.
Sir just like me I know there are many other who really deserve an opportunity to attend these sessions, to acquire this knowledge but are not able to because of lack of some or other facilities. I have always wanted to do something for them but I don’t know exactly what and how. As you said it’s not the government or society on whom we should be dependent upon to do something because it’s the individual from where the change should come from. I really don’t know what I could do and what not for that marginalised and under privileged part of our society. But what I know is I am sensitive enough to feel their pain and have the urge in me to do something for them. My father’s job is in china and because of this current situation even his salary is cut down by 70% or so but I know I don’t have a cut down in my own savings.
As I find this platform as THE PERFECT place where I could do something for society, I want the spend my savings for a cause which benefits the part of our country who actually needs it in these times and I want to help them in these difficult situations. I even have some friends from school who would wish do donate/spend their own savings for the betterment of the society. It would be very helpful for me if you or chetan sir could guide me and help me figuring this out or tell me a way to do so.
(Many thanks for your very evocative and meaningful mail. Wish your extended family, mother and father a safe and happy time ahead about your question: I think the most urgent need is the education of children of workers, construction or others engaged in the petty job, if they can attend the class that you are attending, will that not be great.
I am mentioning several suggestions but it does not mean u should implement all of these. Pl try to help the children without smartphones or net access to benefit from online education, lest they are left behind. -Ed.)
