The IGNITE 2013 competition organised by the National Innovation Foundation – India (NIF) witnessed 20,836 entries being received from over 33 states and Union Territories, of which 26 ideas from 44 students were adjudged as the winning entries. The awards of IGNITE 2013 were announced on October 15, Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday, which is celebrated as the Children’s Creativity and Innovation Day by NIF. The awards were given by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on February 19, 2014 at IIM Ahmedabad where an exhibition of all awarded ideas was also put up.
In his award address, referring to the student ideas, Dr Kalam mentioned, “Innovations enrich society, and looking at many of these innovations I feel we (India) have arrived. We are now entering the age of knowledge-driven economy. Now, it is no more about fulfilling basic needs, but about empowerment. The economy will be driven by knowledge and I am happy to see an impatient India.”
Congratulating the award winners, Dr Kalam also urged the young audience to be intolerant towards inertia and said, “If young India learns to live with unsolved problems, they will never innovate. Many of us see problems in daily life but don’t do anything about it. Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking gives knowledge, and knowledge makes you great.”
The IGNITE competition is organised by NIF in association with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), SRISTI, and other partners. A number of State Educational Boards viz. West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal, Punjab School Education Board, Punjab, Board of School Education, Haryana, Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Education, Goa, Meghalaya Board of School Education, Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh Madhyamik Shiksha Mandal, Chhattisgarh also actively promoted the IGNITE campaign. It is hoped that many other state boards would join the efforts to bring out the hidden creativity of our children.

Students can send their submissions to ignite@nifindia.org along with their personal details or to IGNITE, National Innovation Foundation, Satellite Complex, Premchand Nagar Road, Ahmedabad 380015.
