Once, Thor (the god of thunder) and Loki (the trickster god) left Asgard and travelled to the realm of the king of giants, Utgartha-Loki. The gods were accompanied by Thialfi and Roskva, two children. They reached the king's castle that stood in an open field. There was a huge gate at the entrance of the castle. Thor tried to push the gate open. But even with all his strength, he could not open the gate. They finally managed to squeeze themselves between the bars of the gate and entered the castle.
The king told them that only those who excelled in some skill or art were allowed entry into his kingdom. He asked them what feats they could perform.
Thor and Loki said that Thialfi was the fastest runner in the world. Utgartha-Loki said that Thialfi should race against one of the boys of the land. He called a boy known as Hugi to race against Thialfi.
The gods looked on the spectacle with a bored expression. They knew the result—surely Thialfi would win the race. But the looks of boredom changed into astonishment as Hugi ran past Thialfi and completed the course first.
The gods asked for another race. Utgartha-Loki agreed. The two boys were again asked to race. Hugi defeated Thialfi again. Thor and Loki could not believe their eyes. The king offered to have Hugi race Thialfi again.
Thialfi closed his eyes and tried to focus his entire being on the race. Hugi just stood smiling. The king asked the two to come forward and the race started. The result was the same.
Thor and Loki were extremely puzzled. How could this happen?
Dear readers, can you tell why Thialfi lost the races? To see the answer, turn to p.19.
