"The ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) was established in 1967 with a view to achieve social progress, economic growth and socio-cultural evolution and progress. All ASEAN nations have taken conscious efforts towards improving and empowering themselves in multiple arenas of science, technology, research, development and innovation, through mutual cooperation. The efforts, aimed to create an innovation-driven economy, culminated with the launch of the ASEAN Community and the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2016-2025. India, being a key dialogue partner, ASEAN-India dialogue relations developed rapidly from a sectorial dialogue partnership in 1992 to a full dialogue partnership in December 1995
HBN (Honey Bee Network) and NIF (National Innovation Foundation) India, worked with other countries in Asia Pacific region to harness and encourage their creative and innovative potential by promotion of outstanding grassroots innovations and traditional knowledge. While implementing the project of UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific) titled “Promotion of Grassroots Innovation in Asia-Pacific Countries”, HBN and NIF acted as knowledge and capacity building partners in Asia-Pacific Countries during the years 2007-08. NIF also participated in The ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Exhibition held at Myanmar. An Indian delegation comprising scientists from DST and NIF visited Indonesia in the year 2017. As an outcome of the UNESCAP project, majority of the ASEAN countries now have activities promoting innovations based on the Honey Bee Network approach. As a follow up action of meeting held on December 4, 2017 with the Science & Technology Section of ASEAN Secretariat it was proposed that ASEAN India Grassroots Innovation Forum be organised the following year.
ASEAN India Grassroots Innovation Forum was thus organised as a part of the Puspiptek Innovation Festival
- 2018, Indonesia that includes a seminar on grassroots innovation, a grassroots innovation competition and an exhibition of innovations with participation from India and majority of the ASEAN Member States. India had a delegation of eighteen members including ten innovators (five grassroots innovators and five student innovators). NIF’s involvement in the Puspiptek Innovation Festival – 2018 and its role in developing the ASEAN India Innovation Platform (AIIP) is the first step in establishing a long term cooperation and collaboration between ASEAN and India. This initiative will lead to linking of existing innovation networks in both regions and would help in connecting innovative solutions and innovation mentors of India and ASEAN
