"282349 Bitter Medicine for Pest Control
Hamirbhai mixes 2.5kg of different herbs: Ardusi, Seetafal, Bel, Arni, Neem and Gandivel Vanaspathi to 200litre water and leaves it for a week for fermentation. Later, the mixture is filtered and additional 15litre of water is added to it before sprinkling it over the harvest. This controls pests like caterpillars. The process should be repeated after a week.
Hamirbhai Rambhai Babariya, Pikhor, Taluka- Maliya Hatina Junagarh
Scout: Mayursingh Babaiya
Caterpillars in cotton can be controlled by Calotropis gigantia (HB, 3(3&4):17, 1992), in castor plant by roasted seeds of maize or sorghum (HB, 4(1):12, 1993) and in paddy by neem (HB, 6(3):10, 1995). For more practices on getting rid of caterpillars, please refer to HB, 8(3):10, 1997; 8(3):16-17, 1997; 8(4):3, 1997)
282350 Thorn to Guard the Groundnut Crop
Tikka is a common disease that hits the Groundnut crop when it is 4-8 weeks old. Black and brown coloured dots start appearing on the leaves which slowly results in drying and falling of leaves. From leaves, it spreads to the stem and further destroys the crop.
From the experience of Ramanbhai, thorns are placed at a distance of two feet around the affected area, near the plant. This restricts the disease from spreading and hence, the entire crop is saved.
Also, 1litre water mixed with 20-25ml of thorn milk is considered effective.
Ramanbhai Manibhai Patel, Village: Jamni, Block/ Taluka: Kathlal, District: Kheda
Scout: Jayandra R. Waghela
For alternate practices to control Tikka in groundnut crop, refer to HB, 9(3):15, 1998.
282351 Mulberry for Wound Healing
To kill the bacteria/worms on the wounds of cattle and other animals, spread the juice extracted from Mulberry leaves (Morus alba) (10-12 leaves) on the wound. The process needs to be repeated for three days.
Bhikaji Kantiji Thakur, Sitapur Village, Taluka: Maandal
District: Ahmedabad
Scout: Suresh T Surela
The plant is reported for its wound healing properties (Bhatia et al. The Journal of Phytopharmacology, 3(6): 378-383. 2014) and antibacterial properties (Tripathi et al. Asian Pac J Trop Biomed., 1(4): 298–305. 2011) Mulberry is also reported for other veterinarian uses (HB, 10(4):15,1999; 18(2):18, 2006).
282352 Khakhra Bark for Diarrhoea
Insects and micro-organisms thrive abundantly in the monsoon season. Cattle may ingest/consume infected grass which may cause diarrhoea. As a medicine, Ratniben soaks small pieces of bark of khakhra (Butea monosperma) in water for 2-3hrs. and then feeds them to the cattle over the next two days. This is a traditional practice and has no side effects.
Ratniben Sormabhai Pateliya, Village: Sirjumi, Kunda Kaliya, Padliya, Taluka: Leemkhoda, District: Dahod
Scout: Pravin Vankar
Butea monospema is reported for anti-diarrheal properties (Fageria & Rao, IJSRP. 5(6): 2250-3153. 2015.; Rana & Mazumdar, IJRPC. 2(4): 2781-2231. 2012.; Gunakkunru et al. J Ethnopharmacol. 26;98(3). 2005). Khakhra is also reported for livestock management (HB, 2(1):21, 1991).
282353 Recipe for Organic Manure
Ambalal Baraiya used the excreta of seemtha insects on Kanjo tree as an organic fertilizer. The excreta is collected with the help of hand gloves otherwise it could be itchy.
He also used it for onion crop and reported it to be useful.
Ramshibhai Ambalalbhai Baraiya, Village: Jamni, taluka: Kathlal District: Kheda
Scout: Vihaji Arjanji Delvadiya
For more organic manure, refer to HB, 7(2):12, 1996 & 10(4):7, 1999
