Details " 282302 Mooligai Dosa : Rice -1/2g, Thoothuvalai (Solanum trilobatum) -100g, Musumosukkai (Cucumis maderaspatanus) -100g, Pepper (Piper nigrum) -10g, Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) -10g, Chillies (Capcicum annuum) -5g, Common salt -10g. Rice, soaked in water for few hours, along with other ingredients is ground to make the batter for dosa. Solanum trilobatum is claimed to be used for treating cough, itching (Muthu, C. et al. J. Ethnobiol Ethnomed, 2(1): 43. 2006) and skin cancer (Sini, H. et. al. Orient Pharm Exp Med, 17(1):71-80. 2017) Capsicum annuum has been reported for both antibacterial and antifungal properties and might also be a useful source for antibiotics and food preservatives. Chandrakasan’s way to Herbal Healing Chandrakasan (79) has been practicing herbal medicine for animals for the past 38 years. He has suggested a number of practices to heal the animals. 282303 Dislocation of Knee Joint or Fracture in Legs Cow ghee is mixed with 20 moringa leaves, heated, and administered orally. A handful of properly ground kattukkodi leaves (Smilax zeylanica L.), a handful of maida (flour), and egg white are mixed together to form a paste. The paste is then applied to the affected region. A poultice prepared of cooked rice is tied around the broken portion of the bone. The bone is supported with a bamboo stick. This has to be kept for a week. It will keep the bone intact and help it to heal. (HB, 10(4):15,1999, 4(4): 21, 1993; 12(2):8, 2001; 14(1):3-7, 2003) 282304 Dislocated Bone in the Hind Legs Paste made of mixing egg white (three chicken eggs) with 50g lime juice is applied to the affected area. It is covered with a patch of cotton cloth. A second layer of the paste is applied over the patch and is again covered by another patch of cloth. (HB 2(1):21, 1991; 2(1):22, 1991; 6(3):14, 1995) 282305 Narthangai for Diarrhoea Slices of Narthangai (Citrus medica) are mixed with butter milk and administered orally to cure Diarrhoea. Citrus medica L. is reported for anti-dysenteric properties (Sivaraj, N., et al. Int. J. Curr. Res. Biosci. Plant Biol, 4(1), pp.83-101. 2017). Other uses can be checked at HB, 23(2) 4-7, 2012. 282306 Banana Rhizome for Bloating Banana rhizome (250g) is pounded well and immersed in 1litre of rice-fermented water (Neeragram). This has to be administered twice for two days. Paddy (Oryza sativa) and buttermilk to prevent bloating in animals (SRISTI Honey Bee). 282307 Infertility in Cattle Leaves of Anainerunchi (Pedalium murex) are stirred in 1litre of rice-fermented water and then filtered. This is administered for three days before full moon and new moon days to resolve infertility. Arjuna to Cure Ovarian Wounds Fruit of Marudha maram (Terminalia arjuna) 100g is ground well and mixed with cow milk and administered twice. Mukherjee et al. (Phytother. Res. 17(3): 265-268. 2003) and Chaudhari, M et al. (Phytother. Res. 20(9):799-805. 2006) have reported Terminalia arjuna as a wound healing agent. For more practices regarding Ovarian problems, refer to HB 19(1): 12, 2008; 21(3):16,2010. 282309 Cure for Anorexia and Weakness Slices of Allium cepa (small onion) (250g) are soaked in yoghurt made from buffalo milk. The mixture is kept in sunlight for three hours. Fresh ginger (50g) is added before oral administration. Treatment of anorexia with Allium cepa L. is also reported by Badar N., et al (Pakistan. J. of Ani. & Plant Sc., 27(2). 2017). Both Neem (A. indica) oil and Haridra (C. longa) have proven valuable in the management of non-healing wounds (Singh A., et al. AYU, 35(4): 398. 2014) Other cures for Foot and Mouth Diseases are reported in HB, 2(1):20, 1991; 3(2):20, 1992; 2(1): 20, 1991; 4(1):13, 1993) 282311 Chini leaves for Mastitis Ground Chini leaves (Acalypha fruticosa) (100g) are applied externally, while small round balls are prepared and be administered orally. For more practices to cure mastitis, refer to HB: 6(1) 10, 1995; 10(1): 8, 1999; 20(3) 24: 2009) 282312 Kunthu/ Ephemeral Fever in Bovine Animals Matured five yellow colored leaves of Calotropis gigantea, a handful of tulsi leaves, tobacco (100g), and nine dried chillies are ground together and wrapped in betel vine leaves and administered orally. Animals are also given the smoke of sambrani (Dhoop). The extract of C. gigantea is reported for potential antipyretic activity against both yeast induced and TAB vaccine-induced fever. (Chitme, H. Heine) (10g), Ammania baccifera and a pinch of salt are crushed together. About five drops of the extract are put into the eyes. The leaves of the plant are reported for the treatment of bacterial infection. (Doss A. et. al. Pioneering Veterinary Practices: Muralidhar Reddy Shri Muralidhar Reddy (64) focuses on desi cow based integrated sustainable agriculture; he promoted a draught purpose ongole cattle. He adopts eco friendly ways of feeding the cattle and ensures soil fertility. He has been a regular participant in the All India Livestock Show and Competition, at regional, state and district levels. For the last three decades, he distributed 64 breeding bulls and cows to the local farmers. His family holds a reputation of maintaining the best breeding bulls for draught purpose over the last 50 years. 282314 Stomach Ache in Cattle Animals tend to become dull and inactive when they experience severe stomach ache. Cooked rice mixed with pumpkin (Cucurbita), chillies, and cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) is fed to the cattle. Besides, the back of the animal is massaged with castor oil and panned using copper vessel filled with hot water. Practices to help induce conception among cows: HB, 10(4): 15, 1999; 6(4): 5, 1995; 8(2): 12, 1997; 5(4): 13, 1994; 11(1) 17, 2000. 282316 Treating Indigestion in Calves Feed the cattle with half a litre of castor oil to clear their stomach. Later, stored mixture of 100g of rock salt, dry ginger powder, and Andrographis paniculata powered is fed to the animal at regular intervals. More treatment options for indigestion using Andrographis paniculata can be found at HB, 10(4): 9, 1999 and 11(1) 21, 2000. 282317 Treatment for Sprained Neck in Bullocks Take tiny pieces of bathing soap, mix it with egg white and apply on the area of the sprain. As the mixture hardens, the bullocks feel uncomfortable and begin to kick their legs. The vigorous movement sets the sprain right. Two or three applications are usually needed to relieve the sprain. HB, 7(2):11, 1996, 9(1):10, 1998 282318 Increasing Milk Yield The cattle breeders of Andhra Pradesh increase the milk yield in their animals by using the fruits of nalla jidiginjalu or marking nut tree (Semecarpus anacardium). They soak four to five fruits of marking nut in a mud pot for two days. These are then ground and mixed with rice or rice-bran, and fed to the cattle. Semecarpus anacardium can be helpful in strengthening puberty, increasing milk yield and other veterinary practices. (HB, 3(2):22, 1992; 8(2): 9, 1997; 9(2):17-18, 1998) 2 82319 Garlic for Tapeworm Infestation For treatment, feed the animal with the paste made with finely ground garlic bulbs (Allium sativum) (20 nos.) and salt. The A. sativum center. 2000) 282320 Herbal Ointment for Dermatitis An ointment is made by mixing extracts of Ummettha (Datura fastuosa) leaves, Kharbuja/Muskmelon (Cucumis callosus) leaves and flower, buttermilk, and salt. The leaves of Datura fastuosa mixed with Curcuma longa showed effective cure for dermatitis as reported by Punjani et al. (Journal of Natural Remedies, 2(1):84-87. 2002) Cucumiscallosus is reported for treatment of eczema according to Rahman (A.J.L.S. 1(2): 77-81. 2013) 282321 Increasing Animal Weight A mixture of one ripe coconut, salt (100g) and wild indigo (Tephrosia purpurea) leaves (50g) is further mixed to 1litre of fermented water of paddy (Oryza sativa). The solution is fed to the animal for a week. Tephrosia purpurea is reported as a useful tonic for animals to increase their appetite (HB, 8 (2)7, 1997). 282322 Ointment for Leg Wounds in Cattle People of Andhra Pradesh prepare an herbal paste to heal leg wounds in animals. Mix the droppings of sheep, water-soaked seeds of Tamarindus indica, and soil of termite mounds and boil it. Let it cool, the lukewarm paste is applied to the wounds of cattle. Tamarindus indica is reported to be an effective pain healer (HB, 15(2): 13, 2004) 282323 Ephemeral Fever: Bitter Gourd For relief from ephemeral fever, mix 1Kg of sliced bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) with 1litre of water. Extract the juice and orally administer it with the help of a double-funnel, twice a day, for three days. Whole plant was prescribed to the cattle with the latex of karela (Momordica charantia) leaves to treat them for seasonal fever. Karela (Momordica charantia), commonly known as Bitter melon, has been reported to have hypoglycemic, and antiviral properties. Raza, Haider, et al. (Biochem. Pharmacol. 52(10): 1639-1642. (1996) studied the drug-metabolizing effect on diabetic induced rats. It is also reported to be useful for healing wounds (HB, 4(1):15, 1993; 9(1):17, 1998; 20 (3), 22, 2009). 282324 Arthritis in Animal A solution is prepared by boiling 1kg of the inner bark of drumstick (Moringa oleifera) and Eucalyptus tree leaves in 4litres water till the solution is reduced to half. When moderately cooled, the solution is poured gently over the stiff joint of animal leg. Continue till the joint pain is relieved completely. The practice is scientifically reported in human and rats by Singh V. et al. (Natl. J. Maxillofac. Surg. 2(2):132. 2011) and Martínez-González et al. (Biomed. Pharmacother. 87: 482-488. 2017). 282325 Repeat Breeding Condition in Animal A mixture of handful of Talambrala chettu or navaratnala poolu leaves (Lantana camara), powder of three knots of Tungamustalu (Cyperus scariosus) and 10g salt is fed to the affected animal. Remember, water is not to be given to the affected animal after feeding the mixture. Due to the prescribed concoction, the animal conceives in a week. Leaves of Lantana camara are reported to be useful for infertility in rats by De Mello et. Al. (Vet. Hum. Toxicol. 45(1):20-23. 2003) 282326 Wormkiller Herb against Snake Poison Murlidhar claims the poisonous effect of snake bites can be reduced with the help of the leaves of aadu thinna palai or worm-killer (Aristolochia bracteata). Pound the leaves of worm-killer and mix it with an equal quantity of fresh butter. Aristolochia bracteolate was evaluated to serve as a source of natural antioxidants and common antidote for snake bite. (Sakthivel G. et. Al. J. Evid. Based Complementary Altern. Community Practices in district Coimbatore 282327 Herbal Treatment for Mastitis Rathnammal (47) is illiterate and helps her husband in maintaining six dairy cows and a breeding bull. She treats mastitis disease with the paste made by grinding a handful leaves of Appa kovai climber, a piece of turmeric and an onion. This is smeared over the udder for 2-4 days. Apply it only after milking and washing the udder. Rathnammal, Seeliyur, Renganathapurams, District: Coimbatore The chloroform extract of leaf and stem of Kedrostis foetidissima showed significant antibacterial activity against various types of bacteria as mentioned by S. Priyavardhini (Ancient Sci. Life. 28(2): 10-11. 2008). For more uses of Kedrostis foetidissima, refer to HB, 9(1):9, 1998; 6(4):9, 1995. According, Gupta et al. (Biotechnol. Rep. 6:51-55. 2015), the efficiency of turmeric fractions showed high potential to inhibit some pathogenic bacteria S. aureus to a greater degree than other fractions of C. longa. The study further elucidated that the C. longa rhizome was the more effective antimicrobial agent than the crude extract of C. longa. The antibacterial activity of the onion was tested on four bacterial isolates associated with various ocular infections. (Shinkafi, S. A., & Dauda. Sch. J. App. Med. Sci. 1(3):147-151. 2013) 282328 Seeds to release Placenta Palanisamy is a farmer who maintains five dairy cows. A seed of Kundumani (Abrus precatorius) is ground well and diluted in water to be administered orally. This is effective for retention of the placenta (non-falling of placenta after 2-6 hours of calving in dairy cows). In the case of non-availability of Kundumani, ripened fruits of snake ground are preserved after harvest and stored in a dry place under shade. These fruits along with seeds are ground well and administered orally. Palanisamy, Seeliyur village, Karamadai, District: Coimbatore For more uses of Abrus precatorius, refer to HB, 2(1): 21, 1991; 8(3): 13, 1997; 9(1):9, 1998; 2(1):21, 1991). More remedies were reported for the cure of placenta: HB, 2(1): 21, 1991; 4(1):14, 1993; 8(3): 13, 1997; 8(2): 15, 1997) 282329 Gram Seeds to Repeat Breeding Palanichamy orally administers germinated pulses of Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum) (100g) and horse gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum) (100g) together. The dose has to be continued for at least a week. This leads to oozing of pale paste-like liquid from vagina as symptom of estrus cycle, which according to him is a correct stage for insemination. Palanichamy, Seeliyur village, District: Coimbatore Cicer arietinum has been reported for increasing the reproductive capability in vivo studies on an animal model by Al-Snafi, A. E. (2016) and Ma et. Al. (Sch. Acad. J. Pharm. 5(5): 159-174. 2016) For more uses of Cicer arietinum, refer to HB, 2(1): 13, 1991; 9(3):9, 1998; 17(3):13, 2006) 282330 Neem Oil for Wounds, Swellings & External Parasites The stored solution of neem oil (500ml) boiled with turmeric powder (100g) and camphor (10g) is to be applied to the affected areas. Raju, Sri Kala Oilpilavar Mills, Vijayanagaram village, Kunnur Post, Chiliyur (Via), Mettupalaiyam, District: Coimbatore Kalakumar et al. (J. Vet. Parasitol. 14(2): 171-172. 2000) have reported neem oil to be effective for cattle and buffaloes infested with ticks. The rhizomes of Curcuma longa isolated compounds have been reported in vivo studies on female adult mites (Zhang, Y. et. al. ACTA Entomologica. Sinica. 50(12): 1304-1308, 2007). Neem has been reported for various pharmacological activities: HB, 8(3):8,1997; 3(1):12, 1992; 6(4):9, 1995 Ethno-veterinary Practices by Mayilsamy Mr. Mayilsamy (60) is an herbal healer and has been practicing since 1967 onwards. He is well-known for healing ‘kanakadi’ (small type of snake bite) and ‘Mudakku vatham’ (Tetanus) in cattle. 282331 Treatment for Mudakku vatham (Tetanus) Leaves of Thali - 500g (Hibiscus Linn), Karpooravalli Leaves - 250g (Coleus aromaticus), Bamboo leaves - 500g (Bambusa spp.), Mavilangam leaves - 500g (Crateva adansonii), Pepper - 50g (Piper nigrum), Omam - 50g (Ajwain) (Trachyspermum ammi), Thippili - 50g (Piper longum), Garlic - 50g (Allium sativum), Dried Ginger - 30g (Zingiber officinale) The above ingredients are ground together and diluted in 3litre boiled warm water and administered orally for few days till the animal is able to stand up. In addition, a poultice made of pound Nochi leaves (Vitex negundo) and Calotrophis buds, dipped in boiled neem (Azadirachta indica) oil (1/2litre) is applied to the leg region. The practice is to be continued for 2–3 days. Zingiber officinale (Roohi azam et al., JPSI 3(4). P278-282. 2014) has been used traditionally for tetanus treatment. Sharma et. al. (Indian J. Tradit. Know. 7(4): 594-597, 2008) reported the ethnobotanical uses of Bamboo for various medicinal uses among the tribal group of Arunachal Pradesh. Trachyspermum ammi is also reported for other veterinarian diseases (HB, 2(1):21, 1991; 8(4):17, 1997; 5(4):19, 1994; 9(3):11, 1998). 282332 Herbs for Foot and Mouth Diseases About 200g of neem (Azadirachta indica) and Bilva leaves (Aegle marmelos) are pounded together. They are added to a vessel with the powdered mixture of 20g each of cumin, omam (Trachyspermum ammi), turmeric (Curcuma longa), and large cumin (Cuminum cyminum). It is further boiled in 4litre water. The formulation is kept in warm condition during the night and in the next day, this decoction is administered and continued for three days. Imran et. Al. (Science Asia. 42:392-396. 2016) studied Neem for its anti-viral agents against foot and mouth diseases. Similar practices have been reported in HB, 4(1):13, 1993; 6(4):9, 1995; 6(2):10, 1995. 282333 Pulverized Mixture for Retention of Placenta Pulverized mixture of gingelly seeds (Sesamum indicum) (250g) and jaggery (250g) are diluted with water and administered orally. The ergo-metric alkaloid present in the gingelly mix helps in the contraction of the uterus (Karthickeyan et.al. Indian J. Tradit. Know. 4(4): 462-463, 2005) Similar practices have been reported in HB13(1):9, 2002 & 14(3):7, 2003. 282334 Aloe Vera to Repeat Breeding Aloe vera (two leaves ) (Aloe barbadensis) along with four pieces of turmeric (Curcuma longa) is to be given for the first three days followed by administration of soaked Cowpea, 200g per day for 10 days. Thereafter, when the heat symptoms are noticed, they are inseminated. The combination is also reported for curing mastitis in cattle (Hema et. al. Int. J. Sci. Environ. Technol. 5(6): 4006-4012, 2016) For more uses of Aloe Vera, refer to Honey Bee, 8(3):12, 1997; 8(2): 9, 1997; 9(2):7, 1998; 7(3):9, 1996) 282335 Formulation for Kundhu fever Notchi leaves (Vitex negundo) –0.5kg, Paalai (Thuduppalai) (Manilkara hexandra) leaves – 400g, Pepper (Piper nigrum)– 50g, Thippili – 25g (Piper longum), Omam – 30g (ajwain) (Trachyspermum ammi), Garlic – 50g (Allium sativum), Ginger or dry ginger – 25g (Zingiber officinale) The above mentioned ingredients are ground well and mixed with boiled water and cooled thereafter. The formulation is stored and given for 3-4 days. The antipyretic activity of leaf extracts of Vitex negundo linn has been reported (Miskin, N. et. Al. RGUHS J. Pharm. Sci, 2(2), 78-81. 2012) It has also been reported useful for other veterinarian usage (HB, 5(2):18, 1994; 9(2):17-18, 1998; 6(1):15, 1995). The ethanol extract of P. chaba or P. longum has been reported for antipyretic activity on yeast-induced hyperthermia in rats. (Sireeratawong et. Al. ISRN pharmacology. 2012) R.
