Title IGNITE 08 The national competition of idea and innovations of school and college students was launched at IIM Ahmedabad on 14th July by NIF in association with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), SRISTI, and the other partners. In the segment one and two of IGNITE 08, original, creative and innovative solutions developed by the children were invited along with other ideas/innovations that solved day to day problems. NIF received 961 ideas and innovations from 62 districts of 19 states. These ideas/innovations ranged from sectors like transport, energy, environment, to general house-hold utility items and some even addressed societal problems. Volunteers in Chennai helped in organizing the campaign in the Southern states. The launch was held on 23rd July in Chennai. The awards for the same were to be declared on 15th October, the birthday of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, which is celebrated as the Children’s Creativity and Innovation Day by NIF. The award function will be held at IIM Ahmedabad on 26th November 2008. Beyond Borders: Creativity at the Line of Control Innovation Workshop at Tithwal Karnah (Actual Line of Control), J&K In cases, such as in Kashmir, where part of the families live on one side and part on the other, ripples of any change in one part invariably reaches the other. The Honey Bee Network volunteer, S.F.Ahmed took the initiative to organize workshop in schools and villages involving Tithwal community, having about 10000 people. For almost six months in a year, this region is cut off from the rest of the world because of heavy snowfall at Sadnah top. Major occupation here is pastoralism involving nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle. Given the very weak situation about the public infrastructure for human and animal health, the reliance on local knowledge and innovations is inevitable. It was to recognize such a knowledge system, which plays a crucial role in survival of the people that the Honey Bee Network took initiative. Ahmed organized a three days workshop including introduction to NIF, SRISTI and GIAN, on the spot idea competition, biodiversity competition, prize distribution, etc. More than 200 students participated in the activities and became aware of the NIF’s missions for recognizing creativity and traditional knowledge systems all over the country. It is hoped that peaceful triggers will radiate from such initiatives by enthusiastic volunteers in different parts of the country also. HBN’s Scouting & Documentation Workshop Honey Bee Network partners from seventeen states across the country gathered from 3rd to 5th September 2008 at SRISTI for a meeting cum workshop organised by NIF to discuss and deliberate on Scouting and Documentation procedures, problems and strategies. Regional Dialogue on Biodiversity A Regional dialogue on Implementation of Biological Diversity Act and priorities for biodiversity conservation, sustainable utilization and benefit sharing will be held on February 1, 2009, IIMA. There will be interaction with Chairperson, NBA and other stakeholders in the field of conservation and sustainable utilization of biological diversity, ensuring fair benefit sharing. The outcome is aimed to be a position paper on new initiatives, which NBA could take to strengthen its activities, engage with civil society and the knowledge rich, economically poor conservators of biodiversity living in the forests, coastal areas and other habitats.
