Details Surrounded by tropical forest, people live in small hamlets on the hillocks. Local people are Lingayats who speak Kannada while Vanniyars, Poojaris, Kurumba Gounders speak Tamil. Ragi, groundnut, red gram, mustard are grown in the Adipatam or Kharif season followed by horse gram in the Iyppasi pattam or Rabi season. They also rear cattle along with sheep and goats. Some of the community practices are: 22404 Rathabedi To cure rathabedi (haemorrhagic septicaemia; blood tinged diarrhoea), tubers and leaves of Kollan Kovai Kilangu (Corallocarpus epigaeus Benth Ex. Hook F.) are pounded and mixed with water and administered orally. Leaf, stem and tuber extracts of Corallocarpus epigaeus possess high antibacterial properties against human pathogenic microbes due to presence of various antimicrobial bioactive compounds and phytochemicals (Priyavardhini et al, 2012. International Journal of PharmTech Research, 4 (1): 35-43). Also see Honey Bee 19(3), 11(4), 12(1). 22405 Small pox in poultry Leaves of mayulikeerai (wild Amaranthus species) are crushed and common salt and castor oil are added to this and smeared where small pox symptoms are noticed. Stem and leaves of Amaranthus virides L. (Tandiliva) are reported to be used for the treatment of small pox, by the tribes of Assam (Das et al., 2008. IJTK, 7 (3): 446-454). Castor oil is used for the treatment of small pox along with neem (Alagesaboopathi C. 2011. Asian J. Exp. Biol. Sci. 2(1), 140-142). 22407. 22406 Increase appetite Lavangam (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), pepper, ginger, Valmilagu (Piper longum), garlic, bark of Thapasi tree (Holoptelea integrifolia Roxb.) are mixed with water and boiled. The decoction is mixed with cow/goat urine and administered to animals. Cinnamomum is reported as appetite and digestion stimulant in human and animals (Tipu et al,2006. Pakistan Vet. J., 26(3): 144-148). Holoptelea is used for gastric disorders and it used in treatment of inflammation, acid gastritis, Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Colic, Intestinal Worms, Vomiting, Wounds, Vitiligo, Leprosy, Filariasis, Diabetes, Hemorrhoids, ysmenorrhoea and Rheumatism (Sharma and Singh, 2012. European Journal of Applied Sciences. 4 (1): 42-46). Piper longum helps stimulate the appetite and it dispels gas from the intestines. It functions as stimulant, carminative and given in constipation, gonorrhea, paralysis of the tongue, diarrhea, cholera, scarlatina, etc. (http://www.digvijayherbals.com/piper-longum-fruit-dry-extract.pdf). Also, see HB 4(2&3):23, 1993; 8 (2)7, 1997; 8(2):7, 1997; 14(3): 8, 2003; 18(3) & 18(4):29, 2007for related practices. 22407 Turmeric Harvesters Jayakrishnan (58) relentlessly innovates to solve day to day farming problems instead of just fretting about them. Most of the farmers in his village grow turmeric and its harvesting requires a lot of labour. Moreover, this year, the commodity could not fetch a fair price in the mandi (Rs.3500 /quintal compared to about Rs 15,000 last year). Consequently, the farmers were reluctant to invest heavily on labour as harvesting in an acre needs about 25 labourers. To deal with it, Jayakrishnan made a turmeric harvester which can be attached to a mini tractor through a PTO shaft. The PTO shaft vibrates the iron rods (shown in the picture) which in turn loosens the soil and uproots the rhizomes easily. Per day, the mini tractor can cover upto 2.5 acres consumes 2.5 l diesel saving about Rs 1500 per acre. Jayakrishnan Erankattu Thottam, Gettisamudram post , Anthiyur (Via), Erode District. 22408 Ramaraju (48), a farmer from Puthupalayam village of the same district , also made a turmeric harvester. He owns about five acres of agricultural land and 15 cattle. He had visited Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 2007 where he had come across an abandoned tractor drawn turmeric harvester. It gave him the idea of developing a turmeric harvester using his existing power tiller which he finally made in 2010. It can cover up to one acre in a day and consumes 1.5 l of diesel per hour. He has sold 65 such machines so far, out of which four has been procured by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. He had received Farm Innovator award at National Farm Innovation Meet organized by ICAR. P. Ramaraju Puthupalayam village, Ketti samuthiram (post), Andhiyur (via), Bhavani taluka,Erode District.
