The Neglected Labourer |
Details |
Stuart Mac Donald1 in his famous paper on Agricultural Improvement and The Neglected Labourer showed how the success of many agricultural innovations in 19th century in England were dependent on the skills of farm labourers who learnt to use the new implements and made improvements and adaptations to make them effective. The demand for their skills from farmers in different parts of the country led to technology transfer through their mobility. However, the examples of innovations by labourers are far fewer in literature than will be justified by the mere fact that farmers spent all their life on their own farms, whereas the workers spent on hundreds of farms. Obviously, the range of their experience and exploration is much wider. And yet, we have such scanty contribution in our database from landless labourers, though from marginal farm farmers and labourers we have many. |
