Title Farming in extreme environment: Not so difficult
 
Details Desert Eyelike Drip Irrigation Sprinkler Liu Xing Bole, Xinjiang Liu Xing, a high middle school student, has invented “Desert Eyelike Drip Irrigation Sprinkler” by mimicking the working principle of human or animal eye. It solves the problem of clogging in the outlet holes of drip laterals. When Liu was a fresher at high school, she visited an exhibition at Bayintala Comprehensive Agricultural Development Zone where she saw a set of Israeli drip irrigation equipments. In the exhibition, the farmers shared the problem of frequent clogging of the outlet holes of the capillary tubes which required manual cleaning. Liu took notice of the problem. On her way back from the exhibition some dust flew into Liu’s eyes which later came out with tears. This inspired Liu to think of a sprinkler which was similar to human eye. She drew a sketch of the model when she reached home and began working on it by using wasted plastics, rubber hoses and other materials. Later, with the help of her teachers and classmates, Liu improved her design gradually and developed a rosary-type capillary tube and an eyelike sprinkler. In order to perfect her invention, she again went to Bayintala Comprehensive Agricultural Development Zone with her teacher to solve the problem of inside blockage which was still persisting. At last, she made the final model by dividing the “eyeball” into two parts i.e. upper part and lower part. The upper part touches the “eyelid” with short lashes, which could clean the water inlet to avoid plugging in the inner side of the hose; while the lower part, which is composed of some long and hard lashes, touches ground and cleans the silt to prevent blockage from outer side. This invention won the first prize in the 9th National Youth Invention and Creation Competition and Scientific Conference held in 1998, Hong Kong. Greenhouse Temperature Auto-regulating Machine Chen Shaobo Zhaojiawu Village, Pinggu District, Beijing Chen Shaobo (37, farmer) invented a greenhouse temperature auto-regulating machine in 2009, which is energy efficient and facilitates an increased output as well. Traditionally, the temperature and humidity of greenhouses are manually regulated. Around 20 to 30 air outlets are generally set in a one Mu (about 666.67 m2) greenhouse. To stabilize the temperature and humidity, timely opening and closing of the openings is done manually which is laborious and time consuming. Moreover, to control the illumination intensity, the curtains need to be pulled up and down. So, Chen decided to invent a device to automate these tasks. The greenhouse developed by Chen is made up of a transparent film supported by a scaffold. The air outlets are arranged on the top and their opening, closing and the degree of the opening of the aperture are automated. The fans which are placed opposite to the walls near the entrance can automatically let in fresh air. Thus, temperature, concentration of carbon dioxide, and humidity are controlled and the yield is better. The innovator has set up a factory to produce the machine on a mass scale. The invention was filed for a patent on April 2nd 2009 and published on January 20th 2010. A wheel chair that can climb stairs Li Rongbiao Qianzhaifu Village, Xiji Town, Tongzhou District, Beijing In 2005, Li Rongbiao struck upon the idea of making a low cost wheel chair which could climb stairs. He was motivated to lessen the difficulty of old and disabled people in climbing up the stairs in multi-storeyed buildings. Li sold his double storied house in Beijing town to invest into his research. With the money, he rented a workshop, bought lathes and other equipments, employed some workers and started working. After two years of constant trials he invented the wheel chair in 2007. It has five small wheels which are arranged in the tip of the arms of a star shaped bigger wheel on the rear part. And to support the frontal part of the chair there are four wheels. Hence, the whole wheelchair is composed of 14 wheels. It can be charged and once charged it can be used to climb 2992 stairs. It is convertible and weighs 54 kg. It is also cheaper than the contemporary imported wheelchairs with the same functions. His company is now engaged in producing such chairs at a mass scale. Li is further interested in developing a fully automatic wheelchair as the current ones are semi-automatic.
