Title Technique to facilitate breeding of gourami fish

Abstract Breeding takes place at specific warm temperature in Gourami fish frequently. The water temperatures should be kept in the 25-28 degree C range and the pH between 6.6 and 7.6. (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/ gourami/breedin g2.php downloaded on 1st November, 2009)

Details T.T. Thomas is interested in pisciculture and wanted to rear gourami fish owing to its high demand in his locality. He collected some young fishes and started rearing them in a rock pit in his field. Gourami fishes normally breed only once in a year during April and May. The rock pit in his field is two to three feet deep. During day time, the water in the rock pit gets heated and this facilitates the breeding of the fishes. He provides arecanut leaves and other bushy plants in the pit. The fishes collect these materials and make their homes for living. The environement inside the rock pit facilitates the breeding of gourami fishes and as a result breeding is reported to happen every month ensuring the perennial availability of gourami fishes. The innovator received the best farmer award in the Farmers Science Congress conducted by Kerala Agricultural University.
