Details 24220 Storing of pulses Oruganti Chandramouli has devised a new method to store pulses. He mixes about 500 g of turmeric and 500 ml of groundnut oil in ten kg of pulses. Chandramouli (40 yrs), has studied till class seven. He took to farming at a very young age under his father’s guidance. He still follows many of the practices that he learnt from him. The method is reported in the art. (Indigenous grain structures and methods of storage, http://www.niscair.res.in/sciencecommunication/researchjournals/rejour/ijtk/Fulltextsearch/2006/January%202006/IJTK-Vol%205%281%29-January%202006-pp%20114-117.htm accessed on May 14, 2013). Also HB, 11(4) & 12(1): 25; 2000-2001 Oruganti Chandramouli Duggondi Mandal, Warangal District Practices for chilli and maize Nagisetti Ashok (35 yrs) experiments a lot. He is popular for his innovative farming methods. He has studied till 12th standard. 24221 Growth promoter Ashok immerses about one kilogram of powdered asafoetida tied in a cloth piece. The powder mixes with water and reaches the root zone of the crops. It acts as a growth promoter for chilli crops. It is reported as a herbal pesticide (Honey Bee, 8(4), 1997). It has been used as manure along with cow dung (Honey Bee, 10(2), 1999). 24222 Pests control The farmer grows bodasaram (Sphaeranthus indicus L.) crop around the chilli crop to avoid any type of pests attacking it. The peculiar smell of Sphaeranthus indicus plant repels insects like leaf rollers and hoppers. It has been used in paddy (Honey Bee, 7 (4), 1996) 24223 White ant in maize To prevent white ants in maize crop, Ashok grinds dried seeds of custard apple (Annona reticulata L.) in water and then sprays this mixture wherever white ants (termites) are observed. In case of a large-scale termite infestation, he simply pours the mixture on them. Many others also follow this practice. The leaf extract of custard apple is used for controlling all types of insects/pest in Kenya (Custard apple for pest management. http://kyusomaarifa.blogspot.in/2013/04/custard-applematomoko-for-pest-control.html accessed on May 10, 2013).
