Title Above or Below the Ground, Black or White: Mice or Cold Can’t Fight

Abstract When Chinese leader Deng said, the colour of the cat did not matter, so long as it caught mice, a new paradigm of pragmatism was unleashed. While ideology does matter, as has been lately realized both in India and China, through inclusive development or harmonious development respectively, pragmatism gave the time to increase the size of the pie for distribution to all needy one’s. In this seventh part of Chin (China Innovation Network, on the pattern of Honey Bee Network) several interesting examples scouted by Profs Zhang Liyan, Biyan, and their energetic student team at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics follow. There are several innovations which have counterpart innovations in India (such as electric car, cycle plough and water skates) but there are also innovations which are unique. One thing, which needs far more attention however, is the need to scout grassroots innovations first hand rather than relying only on those gleaned through newspapers and the net. It is expected that in coming years, that will pick up great strength. Opportunities for learning among local communities in both the countries started about six years ago is expected to gain new momentum through a new action research partnership called as Grassroots Innovations For Inclusive Development (GrIID).

Details A small electric car Guo Shu Jun Shang Luo city, Henan province This electric car is two meter long and one meter wide, and has been developed by Guo Shu Jun, 53 years old farmer. The total cost of the car comes to around 3500 Yuan. The top speed of the car can go up to 40-50 km per hour. Bicycle plough Wang Fuhe Miyun County, Beijing Wang Fuhe has designed an interesting plough using different parts of a bicycle. It is slightly different from previous bicycle ploughs published in Honey Bee (11(4) & 12(1): 15; 2000-2001) and honoured by NIF (www.nif.org.in/?q=bicycle_weeder ). Water skiing board You, Tianjin Source: Renmen Net, Tianjin View, 2.4.2008 You is a member of both, Tianjin Winter Swimming Fans Club and the Innovation Association. He has developed a skiing board of plastic to ski on water. (see water skates developed by Dwarka Prasad Chaurasia, www.4award.nif.org.in/html/water_walking_shoe.htm and Honey Bee 17(4) & 18(1): 8-16, 2006, & 2007). Multifunctional farming machine He, a laid-off worker Liangping County Chongqing He, a laid off worker, has designed a multipurpose farming machine attached to pick up van. This machine can be used for a variety of on and off farm uses like threshing, pumping water, transportation of dry crops etc. Source: http://cq.qq.com/ Chongqing Evening News (downloaded on 17.1.2007) Electric staircase-climbing bicycle Chen Xiuwuy, Tianjin This new motor cycle is front wheel driven. Thus, it not only produces greater power but also can climb stairs. Multifunctional snow removal truck Zhang Li, Liaoyuan City Zhang Li, 28 years, works in an auto repair shop in Liaoyuan City in China. He has designed a multifunctional snow removal truck and patented the attachment. It can remove and collect thick ice on the ground without any damage to the surface of the road. He heats the seedbeds by means of electric wires. Li Chun has successfully used this practice in case of watermelons and has shown positive results in the form of better seedling germination rate (It has tremendous implications for greenhouse cultivation in region like Ladakh: Eds). Ring mousetrap Feng Wenju, Xinhui, Guangzhou Feng Wenju, a 69 year-old professional mouse catcher, started researching on a new type of mousetrap after retirement. He has developed a ring-based mousetrap. This simply, safe, and highly efficient mousetrap can contract tighter when the mouse happens to get into the ring and struggles to escape until finally is suffocated. There was an abundance of pig waste not being used for tapping methane gas. He has modified the diesel generator to use biogas generated from the pig wastes. Motivated by this innovation, the city of Enping has established its first landfill gas power generation plant. This generator can generate 12 kilowatts per hour. It also gives voltage stability and is cheaper than diesel generators. Source: Jiangming Daily, issue No. 6293, page A2, http://www.jmnews.com.cn 23.12.2006. Jitter-type multi-charging device Ho Branch, Anqing City, Anhui Province After numerous experiments, using the principle of magnetic field, Ho Branch invented battery charger which generates power by shaking the device. He can charge electric light, timer, power amplifier, cell phone, power supply multi-purpose machine etc. With just shaking for two to five minutes each time, cell phones can be charged for use for an hour or so.
