Title Bajra flour, tobacco extracts make with lemon and aloe a new pact

Details 21101 Cattle cured by pomegranate leaves Most cattle have some worms or gastro-intestinal nematodes in their digestive tract because it is practically impossible to keep cattle-young and old, and sheep completely worm free. There are many anthelmintic medicines available in the market for deworming cattle. Pilujibhai Umrabhai Vasava has come up with a herbal formulation for deworming cattle. He soaks 100 gm each of the crushed leaves of Azadirachta indica A. Joss (neem), and Punica granatum L. (anar) in 400 ml of water for an hour. The resultant mixture is shaken well before use and given to the animal once a day for 2-3 days. Pilujibhai Umrabhai Vasava Kanbudi, Distt. : Bharuch Scout: Prabhat Dahyabhai Patel Azadirachta indica and Punica granatum are reported to possess anthelmintic activity; C Varshneya ( 2006) http://hillagric.ernet.in/edu/covas/vpharma/winter%20school/lectures/42%20Plant%20in%20git%20 management.pdf 21102 Neem and buttermilk synergise Parsottambhai has shared several practices, three of which are given here. He uses the leaves of Azadirachta indica (neem) and buttermilk for pest control. He collects the decantanant after letting buttermilk to settle down.About 200 ml of the filtrate of the leaves of Azadirachta indica is boiled in water till one third of the initial volume is left. It is then mixed with 1500 ml decantant of buttermilk and is sprayed on the crops. A mixture of buttermilk and water in the ratio of 1:5 by volume helps control bollworm and other sucking pests of cotton. (Honey Bee, 14 (1), March 2003, Compilation : T D Nirmala Devi). 21103 Bajri flour and castor oil for disease control in garlic According to the Spice Board of India, garlic production has increased in Gujarat by 480% during 2002-03 to 2006-07. Junagadh district is the largest producer of garlic. It is not surprising to find farmers in the district trying low cost non chemical pest control methods. Parsottambhai mixes buttermilk, cow urine and old rancid flour of bajri (Pennisetum typhoides. Burm) and sprays it at the onset of disease or pest attack for effective control. Another farmer viz., Rameshbhai from the same district uses castor (Ricinus communis L.) oil, water and caustic soda for higher production in garlic. He mixes 1.5 lit castor oil and 100 gm caustic soda in 20 lit of water and sprays on the crop two to three times after irrigation. Pennisetum typhoides contains some anti nutritional compound viz Phenol, Polyphenol, Tannins, Inhibitors of amylases and proteases, goitrogens etc. (Dreyer, D.L., Reese, J.C. & Jones, K.C. 1981. Aphid feeding deterrents in sorghum: bioassay. isolation and characterization. J. Chem. Ecol. 7: 273-284). 21104 Lemon, aloe and tobacco save chilli Parsottambhai also uses tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), Aloe vera, lemon juice (Citrus limon L.) and water for sucking pest control in chilli. He mixes two kg tobacco powder, two kg Aloe vera, 250 gm lemon juice in 20 lit water and boils it. The resultant mixture is diluted to 250 ml per 15 lit of water and then sprayed on crop at an interval of eight days. This reportedly controls the disease up to 70-80 per cent. Parsottambhai Devjibhai Kalariya Ajab, Distt. Junagadh Scout: Rajeshbhai Hamirbhai Vala 21105 Control of semi looper in castor Arjanbhai Bhalabhai Darbar uses goat urine, leaves of neem and water to control semi looper in castor. He distils around 2-3 lit of goat urine containing two kg of neem leaves in an iron box. The condensed liquid is diluted with water in the ratio of 1:30 and sprayed repeatedly on the crop. Arjanbhai Bhalabhai Darbar Jalol, Distt. Banaskantha Scout: Praveen Rohit 21107 Lantana, cassia and tobacco leave no space for pests Jamalbhai Nurabhai Modi of Banaskantha uses gandhati (Lantana camara L.), tobacco and fruit of garmalo (Cassia fistula L.) to control pests in paddy and mung crops. For making two liters of the formulation, he mixes 200 gm leaves of Lantana camara (with their floral part), 200 gm root of tobacco, and 200 gm fruits of Cassia fistula in 3 lit of water, boils it till it becomes two-third of its initial volume. The resultant formulation is then diluted with water and sprayed on the crop.
