Details |
Hill tribes known as ‘Malayalis’ live in Patchai Malai hills (2500 to 3000 feet above sea level), Trichy district, Tamil Nadu. They grow rainfed paddy (Oryza sativa L.), ragi (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn (Poaceae)), samai (little millet, (Pancium sumstrense Roth. Ex.) Roem & Schult (Syn. Panicum miliare Lam.), varagai, pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.), tapioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz), etc. Besides, they also cultivate horticultural crops such as mango (Mangifera indica L.), jack (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.), banana (Musa spp.) and cashew nut tree (Anacardium occidentale L.). The following are the other traditional methods documented by SEVA, during a Mini ShodhYatra in Patchai Malai Hills, 22nd May to 25th May 2009. |
