Title |
Algae Lemna as feed for quail |
|
|
Abstract |
Lemna has high fat and protein content and that makes them a good source of food for animals and poultry. (Lemna minor. Flora, fauna, earth, and sky. The natural history of the north woods, http://www.rook.org/earl/bwca/nature/aquatics/lemna.html downloaded on 18.5.09) |

Divakaran found that an alga locally called lemna (Duckweed: Lemna minor L.) can substitute 50 per cent feed for quail rearing. Once he observed a lot of frogs in a local pond where lemna were growing abundantly. This prompted him to experiment with these algae. These algae multiply very quickly and within a week, they cover the entire pond. Since the available poultry feeds in the market are very costly, cultivation and propagation of lemna might make quail rearing quite economical. |
