Details |
Foot and mouth disease virus cause a highly contagious disease, called “Khur paka” or Foot and Mouth Disease or Hoof and Mouth Disease. It is characterized by high fever for two to three days which declines rapidly thereafter, blisters in mouth leading to discharge of stingy and foamy saliva; and blisters on the feet, which when rupture, cause lameness. To treat this, Pramod Kumar uses the bark of kikar/babool tree (Acacia nilotica L.). He makes a paste of the bark and applies on the affected part of leg.
The methanol extracts of Acacia nilotica (bark and pods) showed considerable inhibitory effects against HIV-1 PR (Hussein, G; Miyashiro, H; Nakamura, N; Hattori, M; Kawahata, T; Otake, T; Kakiuchi, N; and Shimotohno, K (1999): Inhibitory effects of Sudanese plant extracts on HIV-1 replication and HIV-1 protease, Phytother Res., Feb,13 (1):31-6). |
