In order to get a bumper crop of onion (Allium cepa L.), the seeds are sown with carrot (Daucus carota L.). Both the species flower at the same time and thus attract more pollinators than would be the case if only individual species are planted. This leads to increased production for both the species.

Mixed cropping of carrots with onions reduces attacks by Psila rosae Fab. on carrots and Thrips tabaci Lind. on onions, compared with the attack on carrots and onions when grown separately. (Uvah and T. H. Coaker, Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 36(2):159-167, 1984)
According to Narayana Reddy, mixed cropping of a few rows of onion with carrot prevents spreading of pest attack on both the crops (Honey Bee, 9(3):10, 1998). |
