Title |
For Sappainoi Disease / Black Quarter |
|
|
Details |
Livestock owners indicate the ailment as ‘sappainoi’ when animals are affected during rainy season with characteristic symptoms like swelling in the hindquarter (posterior region of hind leg) and crepitating sound upon topically placing pressure over the region. The infected animal is unable to walk owing to cell death in the muscular tissue, pain and high temperature. The affected animal dies within one or two days. The symptoms are specific for the ailment Black quarter caused by bacteria Cloastriidium chauvoei.
Shri Soorappa Naicker identifies these symptoms and treats the affected animal with Kadukkai (Terminalia chebula Retz.) along with lime (Calcium oxide), castor oil (Ricinus communis L.) and kalli (Euphorbia tirucalli L.). He prepares the paste by grinding 20 seeds of kadukkai (after removing the outer layer) along with mixture of lime, castor oil and latex of kalli. The paste is applied over the affected region topically.
The plant Terminalia chebula Retz is well reported for its antimicrobial properties (Ahmad I, Mehmood Z, Mohammad F. 1998. Screening of some Indian medicinal plants for their antimicrobial properties. J Ethnoph-armacol. Sep;62(2):183-93). Similarly the impact of Ricinus communis in reducing inflammatory responses alongwith free radical scavenging activity is well reported (Ilavarasan R, Mallika M, Venkataraman S. 2006). The antibacterial activity of Euphorbia tirucalli is also well documented (Lirio L. G., Hermano M.L. and Fontanilla M.Q. 1998. Antibacterial activity of medicinal plants from the Philippines. Pharmaceutical biology, 36 (5): 357-359). |
