Title |
Ectoparasites in Cattle |
|
|
Details |
Ectoparasites like ‘Unni’ (mites) are exposed to smoke / fumes of the leaves or bark of Purasu (Chloroxylon swietenia DC.), Vidathalai (Dichrostachys cinerea L.) and Doopamaram or guggal (Boswellia serrata Colebr.). According to local belief, the practice should be performed on a new moon day (but it might work on other days as well, experiments are needed, Ed.). The gum exudates of guggal tree is used in incense stick or for fragrance.
Sesquiterpenes isolated from leaves and stems of Chloroxylon swietenia have larvicidal activities. (Ravi Kiran, S Reddy, A. Shiva Devi and P Sita, Bioresource Technology, 97(18): 2481-2484, 2006)
The essential oil from the gum oleoresin of Boswellia serrata showed juvenomimetic activity on insect larva. (Dennis T J, Akshay Kumar K, Srimannarayana G, Raghunathrao D, Fitoterapia, 70(3): 308-310, 1999)
To control lice in chicken, a fire is made near the chicken coop and leaves of Chloroxylon swietenia are put into the fire to raise smoke. The smoke thickens, and wafts on to the chicks housed in the chicken coop. The smoke causes the lice’s death (Honey Bee, 10(2):8, 1999). |
