Title Isabgol (Plantago ovata Forssk.) for Decongestion in Animals

Details In milching animals sometimes the external genitalia does not show symptoms of cyclic changes like tonicity, even after approaching estrus (heat). According to traditional livestock healer, Shri Chelabhai Khengarbhai Vaghela, lack of estrus behaviour is due to internal heat, deficiency of minerals and inadequate involution of uterus. According to him, one kg seeds of isabgol (Plantago ovata Forssk.) are soaked in water during night and fed to the animals the next morning. This routine is followed for ten days continuously. Farmers of this region grow isabgol and during harvesting they collect small seeds and husks and store for such use. Isabgol helps in reducing the internal heat of the animals besides giving nutrition. Eight to ten kg of isabgol husk and small seeds can help in regaining the ovarian cyclical changes in the animals. It has no side effects. This practice is age old and is followed by people in near by villages. Bhikalal Prabhudas Masani of Lilia taluka in Amreli in Gujarat feeds cooling agents to prevent repeat breeding in young heifers, especially those who have not yet calved. Heifers in heat often suffer from repetitive breeding problems. Masani treats them with isabgol (Plantago ovata) and 500 g of castor oil. He mixes these and feeds the mixture to the heifers (Honey Bee, 14(4) & 15 (1): 27, 2003). The plant Plantago ovata has been reported to promote proliferation of human epithelial cells (skin kerat-inocytes and fibroblasts) via enhanced growth factor receptors and energy production.(Khanna Deters A M, Schröder K R, Smiatek T and Hensel A.;Planta Med. 2005 Jan;71(1):33-9).
