Title An innovative way of growing pointed gourd (parmal) in summer

Abstract Straw mulch reduced weed growth and increased crop yield significantly (Ghorai , A. K. & Hera, P. S. (1998), Indian Journal of Weed Science, vol.30 (1&2) http://www.indianjournals.com/ijor.aspx?target=ijor:ijws&volume= 30&issue=1and2&article=004 downloaded on 25.01.10)

Details Parmal (Trichosanthes dioica L.) is generally grown in summer days. But due to severe heat wave during the last 5-6years, the crop production has suffered. The vegetable looks yellowish, premature and shrunken due to heat wave and climate change. Kartika prepares small circular mats of paddy straw and spreads these around the roots of each plant. Soil retains the moisture for longer time due to the straw mats. There is also lesser growth of weeds in the field. He has been following this practice for the last four years with good results
