Title Biocontrol for Parthenium weed

Details Mr L C Channaraja, a farmer has identified a biological method of control for Congress Weed (Parthenium hysterophorus) using another weed Bird Flower (Crotalaria laburnifolia L.), growing in the waste lands and in the fields. Seeds of this weed are collected in the months of December-January from fully matured pods. Three kg of seeds sufficient for an acre are mixed with an equal quantity of sand and then broadcasted in the field. Crotalaria laburnifolia has a fast growing capacity, and suppresses the growth of Parthenium. It also acts as a very good mulch. It increases the activity of honey bees because of its flowering nature. In addition, it increases the soil fertility, supplies fodder to cattle, and is an eco-friendly method of weed control.
