Farmers, in their pursuit to find an effective alternative for bull, try innovative experiments and come up with mechanical devices for enhanced farming. In Saurashtra, planters carry out trial and error method to modify automated tools to suit their needs. Balubhai Barad, of Umrethi village, has developed an equipment for land tilling out of a bicycle! Earlier, Gopal Bhai Bhise of Maharashtra had developed slightly differently designed hoe.When he thought of developing his hoe, Balubhai bought an old bicycle, removed its rear wheel as well as the carrier and, as shown in the picture here, fixed two wheels wherein he installed a chain pulley. He used alight weight blade behind it, so that interculture becomes easier.
Now he is thinking of a little modification in the cycle by installing a small engine so that the person operating it does not have to pedal. He is in search of an engine with equivalent energy that is required for ploughing (Jagtap, a friend of Gopal Bhise did develop one like that as shown in the picture above. But there is certainly a scope of making an even better design: Ed)
