Title Putting Common Knowledge to Uncommon Use

Details For aphids, sucking pests and termite control, 500 gm leaves of custard apple (Annona squamosa L.), 250 gm leaves of ‘karanj’ (Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre), and 250 gm leaves of giant milkweed (Calotropis procera (Ait.) R. Br.) are pound together and kept in an airtight container mixed with 10 lt of ‘gaumutra’ (cow urine). It is left for 15 days to ferment and then is filtered with a cloth. About 250 ml of filtrate mixed with 15 lt of water is sprayed to control the pest. For controllingtermites, five liters of solution is mixed drop by drop, using drip method, with the irrigation water in the canal. To control the aphids or sucking pests, two sprays at an interval of seven days are expected to help. (‘Aakdo’, ‘sitafal’ and ‘karanj’ (Calotropis procera (Ait.) R. Br.), (Annona squamosa L.) and (Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre), all three of these plants are known for their insect killing properties. http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/may252002/1196.pdf) Mahendrabhai has tried several non-chemical practices in his Panchkuti farm close to Mahemdavad. He says that planting few specific crops along with the main crop helps control pest attack. Often these secondary plants attract birds or insects that prey on the injurious insects afflicting the primary crop. “In my farm I have raised various plants like ‘barmasi’ (Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don), ‘champo’ (Michelia champaca L.), ‘galgoto’ (Tagetes erecta L.), ‘tulsi’ (Ocimumsanctum L.), ‘damaro’ (Ocimum basilicum L.), custard apple (Annona squamosa L.), ‘ardoosi’ (Adhatoda vasica (L.) Nees), calotropis (Calotropis gigantea (L.) R. Br.), ‘mitho limdo’ (Murraya koenigii (L.) Spr.) and ‘diwela’ (Ricinus communis L.) on the hedge.” (Reports of insecticidal and repellent properties of Azadirachta indica, Ricinus communis, Ocimum spp and Adhatoda vasica are available. Calotropis gigantea and Annona squamosa are known for their insecticidal and repellent properties http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/may252002/1196.pdf).
