Title Value addition to traditional practices

Details Infestation of blood parasites is a serious problem among cattle. The parasites can cause high fever, passing of urine with blood and sometimes even sudden death. Farmers use the dry powdered leaves of chiretia plant (Andrographis paniculata) to treat this condition. This practice was observed by Dr. Ashok Ku Palei, a junior veterinary officer working with the Veterianary Hospital at Sundargarh. He also noticed that this treatment was leading to recovery in 70 to 80 % of the cases. He studied this method and made some modifications. He formulated a mixture where an equal proportion of chireita leaf powder and boric acid (40 gms each) is mixed with 100 gms of jaggery. This mixture is given once a day to the affected cattle for 10 days. The recovery rate improved to almost 100 %. Dr. Palei believes that the mixture serves a preventive function. Dr. Ashok Ku. Palei District Sundargarh (It would have of course been ideal and true to the philosophy of the Honey Bee network, if Dr. Ashok Palei had also noted the names of the villagers from whom he had learnt this practice.
