22401 Protective plants against wild animals
A novel way to drive wild animals off the farms is by planting ‘Baghaampura’ Litsea sebifera (Willd.) Pers Syn. Litsea glutinosa (Lour.) CD Robins) and ‘Kanteikoli’ (Ziziphus oenoplia (L.) Mill. Litsea is also reported to have insect repellent property; besides, Ziziphus has thorny branches, and thus might keep tiger, wild boars and bears away. This thus saves domestic animals from their attack as well.

Litsea plant (also called shampoo tree) species are rich in aromatic compounds having lauric acid. Litsea glutinosa seed oil (lauric acid 85% and oleic acid 15%) may distract animals from the field. Ziziphus species are used as hedge for protection against animals due to presence of thorns (http://www.winrock.org/fnrm/factnet/factpub/FACTSH/ziziphus.htm). The collection of wood and fodder inside the forest requires long working hours. Sometimes food and water gets exhausted. The villagers quench their thirst from the juice of the stem of ‘Dhatak’ (Woodfordia fruticosa (L.) Kurz. Syn. W. floribunda Salisb.)

22403 Turmeric and pineapple juice for deworming

Worms are a major problem for children. Dilip Kumar prepares pineapple leaf juice. He adds two spoonful of this juice to five grams of turmeric paste. It is administered to the affected child for five consecutive nights. He has treated ten such cases successfully.
