Title Calotropis to Fight Red Hairy Caterpillar in Groundnut

Abstract AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES

Details Ms Prasanthi uses leaves of Calotropis procera (Ait.) R.Br to control red hairy caterpillar. The latex of Calotropis leaves has toxic properties and interferes with pupation, growth and reproductive activities when consumed by the red hairy caterpillar. Thus it acts as a herbal pest control agent in groundnut crop. Prasanthi, 3-6 Kondamita, Srikalahasti, Distt. Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh Partially purified flavonoids obtained from Calotropis procera have ovicidal effect on bruchid eggs and also affect the number and weight of the emerging adults as a function of concentration (B.K. Salunke, H M Kotkar, P S Mendki, S M Upasani, V L Maheshwari, Crop Protection, 24(10): 888-893,2005). Leaves of the Calotropis gigantea are immersed in water channel during irrigation to minimize aphid infestation in mustard crop by R.S. Narayanan of Konur (Honey Bee, 2(1):16, 1991).
